Why is ARAKODA different?
ARAKODA offers broad-spectrum activity on different lifecycle stages for all species of plasmodium parasites. Unlike many daily malaria prevention medications, ARAKODA is taken once weekly after an initial loading period.
Because tafenoquine can affect individuals with certain enzyme deficiencies, travelers must complete a G6PD lab test prior to prescription. If clinically appropriate, your prescribing physician will review your lab results before issuing medication in a convenient weekly dosing regimen.

The typical dosing schedule includes one tablet daily for 3 days before travel, followed by one tablet once per week while traveling in a malaria-risk area, and one final dose taken 7 days after the last weekly dose. ARAKODA should be taken with food and swallowed whole. Your physician will provide exact instructions based on your travel itinerary.
A key difference is that ARAKODA is taken once weekly during travel after the initial loading doses, while some other malaria medications must be taken daily. For certain travelers, this weekly dosing schedule can be more convenient for longer trips.
Yes. Before ARAKODA can be prescribed, you must have documentation showing a normal G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) test result. This screening is required because people with G6PD deficiency should not take tafenoquine. Your physician will provide an order for G6PD lab work to be completed prior to prescribing.
ARAKODA may not be appropriate for certain individuals, including those who:
Your physician will review your medical history to determine whether ARAKODA is a safe option for you.
ARAKODA is generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported side effects include headache, back pain, and diarrhea. Some people may also experience nausea, dizziness, sleep disturbances, or abnormal dreams. As with all medications, more serious side effects are possible, and you should review the medication guide provided with your prescription.
If a dose is missed, replacement dosing may depend on when the missed dose occurs in the treatment schedule (before travel, during travel, or after travel). Follow the instructions provided by your physician or the medication guide to ensure you complete the full course of treatment.
No malaria medication provides 100% protection. In addition to taking ARAKODA as prescribed, travelers should reduce mosquito exposure by using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and staying in screened or air-conditioned accommodations whenever possible.
